1. Agatha Christie
In an event that has puzzled her fans for nearly a century now, mystery novelist Agatha Christie took a page out of one of her own stories and disappeared under circumstances that will remain forever ambiguous. On the night of December 3rd, she drove away from her Berkshire home and precipitated one of the great tabloid stories of the day. Her car was later discovered abandoned on a steep slope, and she was nowhere to be seen. An enormous manhunt ensued, that involved other celebrities, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Turns out she had taken a train to Harrowgate, where she spent eleven days mixing with young socialites under the adopted name of her husband’s mistress. Christie claimed to have no memory of the events. It is speculated that she could have been in a “fugue state” brought about by depression.
